Leaflet Geometry and Anisotropy of Bioprosthetic Heart Valves: Do They Matter?

چکیده
Introduction: The most popular replacement heart valves continue to be bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV), which are fabricated from biologically derived biomaterials. While these devices benefit from low thrombogenicity and excellent hemodynamics similar to the native valve, device failure continues to be the result of leaflet structural deterioration mediated by fatigue and tissue mineralization. Moreover, valve performance is highly dependent on leaflet geometry. There is thus a profound need to enhance the physical realism of the BHV dynamics simulation in the design context. In this study, we developed a framework for parametric study of BHV to investigate the influence of the geometry of the leaflets on heart valve performance and to simulate the effect of leaflet material model of the leaflets on valve dynamics.

Vibrational analysis of bioprosthetic heart valve leaflets using numerical models: effects of leaflet stiffening, calcification, and perforation.
The fundamental natural frequency of the closed cusps of porcine bioprosthetic valves, fabricated from the normal leaflets of pig aortic valves, was estimated using a finite element model. Both normal and stiffened leaflets were considered in the vibrational analysis. The effects of conditions that simulated degeneration, such as stiffening, central perforation, a tear, calcium deposits in the ...

Introduction: With the development of interventional cardiology in the world, in addition to coronary and aortic diseases, the treatment of heart valve diseases through catheters has recently begun. The treatment of aortic stenosis (which was only possible with open surgery and valve replacement) was first performed in the world in 2002 by Alain Cribier in France with catheter insertion of the ...

1. Artificial heart valves have been in use for over five decades to replace diseased heart valves. Since the first heart valve replacement performed with a caged-ball valve, more than 50 valve designs have been developed, differing principally in valve geometry, number of leaflets and material. To date, all artificial heart valves are plagued with complications associated with haemolysis, coag...
متن کاملA framework for designing patient-specific bioprosthetic heart valves using immersogeometric fluid-structure interaction analysis.
Numerous studies have suggested that medical image derived computational mechanics models could be developed to reduce mortality and morbidity due to cardiovascular diseases by allowing for patient-specific surgical planning and customized medical device design. In this work, we present a novel framework for designing prosthetic heart valves using a parametric design platform and immersogeometr...
متن کاملThrombosis of Bioprosthetic Valves
O ver the 5 decades that bioprosthetic valves (BPVs) have been commonly implanted, the frequency of superimposed thrombosis has been thought to be negligible (1). Thus, early echocardiographic follow-up of patients with BPVs has been sparse, and chronic anticoagulation was mostly avoided. After the baseline post-operative study, current guidelines state that “patients with bioprosthetic valves ...
